Literature for children and young people in the 1960s and 70s encouraged readers to become aware of the societies in which they were living and to give collective expression to their concerns. Today, the focus is more on the individual (“all these egos”). Barnboken wishes to stimulate analysis of this shift of perspective and of the impact general literature and social change may have had on development of new narrative techniques and on how young protagonists are portrayed. We therefore welcome scholarly articles in English or Swedish on the theme “From mission:society to mission:ego in literature for children and young people” for submission to issue 2009:1 of Barnboken – tidskrift för barnlitteraturforskning. Papers should not have been published previously, or submitted elsewhere simultaneously.

Abstracts of 300 words should be emailed to lillemor.torstensson@sbi.kb.se and include:

1) paper title
2) name, affiliation, and email address

The deadline for abstracts is 1 May 2008. The abstracts will be vetted by the editorial board by the beginning of June 2008. Deadline for finished papers relating to the selected abstracts is 1 September 2008. A style sheet is available on www.sbi.kb.se or by contacting Lillemor Torstensson, editor. The journal is refereed by members of the editorial board – a group of distinguished Swedish academics working in the areas of children’s literature, Stefan Mählqvist, PhD, Professor Maria Nikolajeva, Agneta Rehal, PhD and Associated professor Sonja Svensson.
