We are inviting applications for a three-year postdoctoral research fellowship as a part of a collaboration between the Children’s Studies program at York University and CultureLink Settlement and Community Services of Toronto. Our project explores the wellbeing and integrative impacts of children’s participation in choirs for newcomers to Canada. The choirs are being facilitated through CultureLink and take place across the GTA. The project is framed through the field of ethnomusicology and requires ethnographic field research across disciplines. Field research will focus on work with children and young people across the GTA who participate in the CultureLink choirs.
The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to spend 50% of the time with the partner organization (CultureLink) and 50% working on the project at York University. Additional teaching and funding may become available over the course of the 3-year position. The postdoctoral research fellow will be expected to travel throughout the GTA to work with children and young people at several locations.
The postdoctoral position is funded through SSHRC, Mitacs, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The position at this stage is considered part-time but additional funding and teaching may contribute to the salary over the course of the position.
Applicants must have a PhD in a field related broadly to the Social Science and Humanities. The applicant must also speak fluent Arabic.
Other desired skills: a musical background (desired background in ethnomusicology), previous demonstrated work with children and young people, previous fieldwork experience, an ability to lead the project and oversee other project collaborators, an ability to apply for future funding, strong organizational skills, an ability to work with people across cultures, generations, and workplaces, a background in applied academic work, an ability to work across sectors (academic and industry).

Position salary: Part-time salary of $30,000 CDN per year (additional project funds and teaching may become available throughout the course of the position)
